Though not as commonly practiced today, Rakta Mokshana has long been an important part of traditional Ayurvedic healing. It is a specialized therapy designed to purify the blood by carefully removing small quantities of it from the body. This process helps to eliminate toxins, relieve inflammation, and treat diseases that stem from impure or stagnant blood.
How Rakta Mokshana Works
There are two main techniques used in Rakta Mokshana:
-
Leech Therapy (Jalaukavacharana):
Medicinal leeches are applied to a specific area of the body where bloodletting is needed. These leeches naturally latch onto the skin and draw out impure blood. Once they’ve completed the process, they detach on their own. This method is gentle, effective, and especially useful for delicate or sensitive patients. -
Venesection (Siravedha):
In this method, a small vein is carefully punctured to release a controlled amount of blood. This helps reduce toxic buildup and improve circulation in the affected area.
After the procedure, turmeric powder may be applied to the area to help stop bleeding and prevent infection due to its natural antiseptic properties.
